Artist Anuar Khalifi’s Search For The Truth And Personal Identity In The Modern World

A new exhibition marks The Third Line’s second solo show with the Spanish-Moroccan artist

On view until 19 May at Dubai’s The Third Line gallery is Mirror Ball, an exhibition showcasing new works by Spanish-Moroccan artist, Anuar Khalifi. The name – a reference to the only sculpture in the entire exhibition – nods to the journey of self-discovery in modern times.

Surrounding the sculptural masterpiece are several vibrant paintings that examine the intricacies of personal identity and the experience of living between two worlds, both seen and unseen.

“In the work of an artist there is a cosmos of meanings and symbols that appear and disappear, surrounding him like satellites,” says Khalifi. “This enables him to have command over the narrative.”

With the underlying themes of colonialism, capitalism and the global south, the self-taught artist searches for the possibility of an authentic identity that exists between modernity and tradition. The viewers are provoked to question societal norms and to challenge the barriers that hinder the search for an eternal truth.

The characters in Khalifi’s work are each on an intimate journey of discovery, yet they all unite to form connection and dialogue. While they’re all on a solo path, a beautiful sense of reliance highlights the power of unity and belonging.

The past and present are brought together with the artist’s own personal reflections, prompting viewers to see the outside world from within. Inspired by classical painters and Moroccan culture, the works are an homage to Khalifi’s storied roots and journey to transcendence.

“Painting is not a utilitarian form of art, not in a material way,” says the artist. “But precisely because of that, it has the potential to transform both, the artist and the viewer.”

Mirror Ball by Anuar Khalifi is on view at The Third Line in Dubai until 19 May 2023.
